Building on the organizational principles identified by Super Bowl winning coach Brian Billick in his landmark text, Developing an Offensive Game Plan, Pre-Season Practice and Offensive Game Planning expands on those concepts in the context of the off-season and pre-season, breaking down a step-by-step approach to building and adjusting an offense in preparation for pre-season camp. The goal of the process is for a team to develop the best possible package relative to its talent and opponents, using the appropriate amount of offense given the available practice time and the team's circumstances. The team then organizes its practice time in such a way that individual and group skills are being practiced in proportion to the amount they will be used in games for maximum effectiveness. Among the topics covered: the "right" amount of offense, decisions about additions to and adjustments with the offense, prioritizing and organizing the running game, prioritizing and organizing the passing game by coverage, prioritizing and organizing the passing game by situation, pre-season installation, breaking down individual skills, and practice time allotment for individual skills.
