About the Author
Cathie Summerford has plenty of real-world experience, having taught physical education at Apple Valley Middle School in Apple Valley, CA, since 1993. She also has served as an adapted physical education specialist at Victor Valley College in Victorville, CA, since 1994.
Recognized as an expert in her field, Cathie was named the 1997 California School Boards Associations Golden Bell Award Winner, an honor made sweeter by the fact that hers was the only physical education program recognized in California. Cathie also was named the 1999 Outstanding Middle School Physical Educator of the Year for California and won the 1994 Sallie Mae First Year Teacher Award for Apple Valley Unified School District. Cathie was also honored as the NASPE 2000 Southwest District Teacher of the Year.
Cathie is a popular public speaker who is frequently invited to share her active living approach to physical education at conferences and workshops. Widely published in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and other journals, Cathie is a relentless innovator who continually created opportunities for her students to achieve.
Cathie began her coursework in physical education at San Diego State University and received her bachelors degree from California State University at Fresno in 1991. She also earned two credentials at Fresno State, including adapted physical education specialist. In January 2000 she received her master level certification as a Jensen Learning brain-compatible trainer.
